Protect this Heart Award Recipient – Dana Vollmer

Born in 1987 and raised in Granbury, Texas, Dana Vollmer began competitive swimming early. At age 12, she was the youngest person in the Olympic Trials. At the age of 15, after experiencing dizzy spells, she was diagnosed with a genetic cardiac electrical disorder called Long QT Syndrome.

Despite this diagnosis, Dana continued to swim, but always had an automated external defibrillator (AED) within reach. Last summer at the London Olympics, Dana set a world record in the 100m butterfly and won four gold medals. Dana has used her condition and notoriety to raise awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and death. We celebrate her commitment by making her the first recipient of the Protect this Heart Award.

Lawmaker of the Year Award – Representative Mike Vereb

Mike Vereb was elected to represent the 150th Legislative District in Montgomery County in November 2006.  He serves as a member of the House Republican Leadership team in the position of House Republican Caucus Secretary for the 2011-12 legislative session.  In April, 2011, after a visit from Simon’s Fund, Mike introduced HB 1610 – The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Prevention Act, which was signed into law on May 30, 2012, making Pennsylvania the first state to protect student athletes from sudden cardiac arrest.

Simon’s Club Honorees – The Harrington Family

In 2011, Drew Harrington attended the Radnor heart screening and discovered a heart condition – Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome.  On October 21, Simon’s birthday, Drew underwent a procedure to correct this condition.  The Harrington family has become tireless advocates for Simon’s Fund through raising awareness, lobbying for HB1610, and organizing the Haverford heart screening.
