Simon weighed 6 pounds 15 ounces at birth. His APGAR score was 8 and 9. He'd finish a bottle every couple of hours except at night, when he'd give us about a 4 hour stretch of sleep. He was at 50% for weight and 25% for height. He smiled for the first time at seven weeks. At 96 days, he died.
I thought that Simon was healthy. I thought that he was safe. I did not realize that little hearts could just stop working. I did not know that children died from sudden cardiac arrest.
Since his death, I've learned that about 7,000 - 10,000 kids die each year from sudden cardiac arrest. Most of the time, they are playing sports.
I know that I can't bring Simon back, but I can educate you about sudden cardiac arrest so that you can do a better job of protecting your children.
