“AEDs save lives,” Foster said. “This shows that its really important to have AEDs. ”The freshman was running laps in the school’s gym as part of a routine gym class when she fell out, said MHS ninth-grade principal Kathy Crain.

A Lewisville middle schooler returns to class two weeks after cardiac arrest. Monday was Flavio Longoria’s first day back to class at Huffines Middle School in Lewisville. He collapsed on the soccer field and turned blue two weeks ago.

“We were running, doing sprints, and I just got lightheaded and fainted,” Flavio said. “Next thing I knew, I woke up, and paramedics were all around me.” The 14-year-old soccer player’s heart had stopped beating. While coaches started CPR, a school nurse shocked Flavio with an automated external defibrillator.

State law requires every public school in Texas to have one. ”It’s just amazing they knew what to do,” said his mother, Gina Rodriguez. “[They] had the machine and were able to bring him back, because he was gone for a minute.” Doctors told Flavio he would not have survived if not for the quick thinking of his coaches and the school’s nurse.

“I thank God they were there,” Rodriguez said. “I know God placed the right people there to save his life.”

SWARTZ CREEK — Doctors still are trying to figure out why a 10th-grader’s heart stopped last week while he was playing basketball at a school gym, the boy’s father said. Marquavian Stephens, 15, was saved by coaches who used an automatic external defibrillator in the Swartz Creek High School gym to restore his heartbeat.

His father, Antonyo Peat, said Marquavian’s heart failed again briefly Monday during a stress test at a Detroit hospital but was restored. “He’s doing OK,” Peat said. “It’s looking like (doctors) are leaning toward a pacemaker.” Marquavian, who had hopes of making the varsity squad this year was taking a break during a night session at the gym Wednesday when he collapsed.

Boys basketball coach Jeremy Trent, girls volleyball coach Nellie Guajardo and middle schools boys basketball coach Bill Black were at the gym and used CPR and the defibrillator to save him. The coaches declined comment. All of the district’s coaches are required to be trained in how to use the defibrillators, school officials have said.

Rodeo can be a dangerous, even deadly sport, but rodeo probably saved A.J. St. Goddard’s life last Friday night. The 20-year-old University of Montana Western student had just finished his bareback ride on Medina Gold at the NILE Rodeo when he collapsed after being set down by his pickup rider.

“The last thing I remember is taping up my buddy, Buck,” St. Goddard said from his Billings Clinic hospital bed Wednesday. When St. Goddard collapsed, EMTs present at the event in case of injury strapped him to a backboard and rushed him into a waiting ambulance. As his girlfriend, Tiffany Sinclair, stepped into the ambulance to ride with him, the EMTs told her to get out. St. Goddard’s heart had stopped.

“I kept wanting to touch him and be in there,” Sinclair said through tears as she recalled watching the EMTs work. “It seemed like it took forever. I was just begging him to come back. He couldn’t leave.” The healthy young athlete had suffered sudden cardiac arrest. It’s not a heart attack, which is more or less a cardiac plumbing problem. Cardiac arrest is caused by an electrical disturbance in the heart.

According to the American Heart Association, sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death among adults over the age of 40 in the United States and other countries. In the United States alone, roughly 350,000 people die every year from the affliction. Half of men and 60 percent of women who suffer sudden cardiac arrest die when it strikes.

To prevent trauma to St. Goddard’s brain, doctors at Billings Clinic used drugs to induce a 24-hour coma. The idea is to reduce blood flow to sections of the brain damaged when St. Goddard quit breathing, allowing time for them to heal and any swelling to subside.

Without oxygen, brain cells die. The longer the brain goes without oxygen, the worse the trauma to the brain. Most patients who go without oxygen to their brains for 10 minutes never regain consciousness, according to the American Medical Association.

“The scary part was how much oxygen he lost to the brain,” said St. Goddard’s father, Jay. “The machines were running him for a while.” While St. Goddard was in a coma, his parents, Jay and LeAnn, were rushing from Browning, where they had been attending Blackfeet activist Elouise Cobell’s funeral. ”It’s probably the fastest drive I’ve ever made to Billings,” Jay said.

SPANISH FORK — The 6-year-old boy who collapsed and nearly died at a Spanish Fork elementary school Thursday is recovering in the hospital. His parents say he had no prior history of heart problems, and they’re grateful a responding police officer was carrying a defibrillator. It’s been a tough 24 hours for Todd and Laura Powell. Thursday, their 6-year-old son Logan’s heart stopped beating without any warning during his PE class. His teacher immediately called his mom.

“It is hard to process,” Laura Powell said. “You are so concerned, and any mom would think the absolute worst; and it was even a little worse than that, just not knowing of your baby would make it.” “If another 20 minutes of time had passed, another 10 minutes had passed, and (I) think there would have been an entirely different outcome.”

According to a news release from Wayland Union Schools, the 14-year-old girl collapsed at Wayland Middle School around 9:15 a.m. Tuesday. School staff members immediately began performing CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) on her until police and paramedics arrived. The girl is undergoing tests at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids and is listed in stable condition.

Portable defibrillators are not in every school, but the Wes Leonard Heart Team is lobbying lawmakers to pass a measure to require schools to have them. Wes Leonard, 16, died last March after collapsing at the end of his Fennville basketball team’s final regular season game. His death was blamed on complications from an enlarged heart. His family started their foundation to prevent other teenagers from dying.

SPANISH FORK — A 6-year-old boy is recovering after his heart stopped beating while at school Thursday. The student was taking part of a P.E. class outside at East Meadows Elementary School when he suddenly collapsed. But a two-minute response and life-saving training got his heart back in rhythm.

The boy is recovering at Primary Children’s Medical Center following the heroic efforts of those who first noticed him. His doctors say he’s still in critical condition, but his heart is beating on its own and he’s breathing on his own. He remains on oxygen as a precaution. ”Our main concern is for the student and their family,” said Nebo School District spokeswoman Lana Hiskey.

Friends were playing together when the young boy collapsed. One of the boy’s friends told the playground supervisor, who discovered the boy was not breathing and had no pulse. ”Our adult personnel moved quickly, called 911, and the emergency response vehicle got here very quickly,” Hiskey described. “(They) promptly took the student to a medical facility.”

The police got there in two minutes and tried to revive the boy with CPR, but only got a couple of breaths out of the boy. That’s when they used an Automated External Defibrillator to shock his heart back into action. ”Our adult personnel moved quickly, called 911, and the emergency response vehicle got here very quickly.”

Screenings are good, but if a sudden cardiac event happens, an AED may the only way to get a kid back. This is a happy ending.

Frisco teachers used an automated external defibrillator to revive a 12-year-old student. Seventh-grader Kylee Shea collapsed while walking to gym class. ”I sat down, then I fell over, and I don’t remember anything after that,” she said. Doctors have have diagnosed Kylee with a heart arrhythmia, meaning her heart was quivering rapidly but wasn’t pumping blood.

“Survival for somebody who collapses outside a hospital for a child is about 3 percent — not very many,” said Dr. William Scott, her physician. Kylee’s classmates at Frisco Middle School rushed to get help. Brent Reese and Kristen Goodgion, the two teachers who responded, calmly performed CPR and used the AED. By the time paramedics arrived, Kylee was speaking and asking for her mother. ”They had a hand in a miracle, and it’s just, ‘Thank you,’” Sheryl Shea said.

She and her husband, Mike, now both advocate putting AEDs in all schools and public buildings nationwide. ”If it wasn’t for this machine and what they did, our daughter still may be with us today, but she wouldn’t be the Kylee we know,” Mike Shea said. Doctors still don’t know what caused Kylee’s heart problem. She now has a pacemaker, which will physically limit her from participating in contact sports.

Kaylee will resume school next week. She has a long list of people she wants to thank, starting with Reese and Goodgion. The teachers said their efforts on Kylee’s behalf emphasize the importance of AEDs and of teachers. ”The biggest thing is, we were here for a reason, and that was Kylee,” Goodgion said.
