Akhir Frazier would have begun his junior year at Norristown Area High School the week before last.
But on the first day of school his stepmother, Denise Frazier found herself calling the office to tell them Akhir would not be there that day, or any day. The teen from Prep Charter High School in Philadelphia died Aug. 25 at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, four days after collapsing at the Hank Gathers Recreation Center in North Philadelphia, where he’d been playing in a summer basketball league.
“He was in the game for no more than five minutes … and he asked to be taken out,” Frazier said. “He collapsed in the coach’s arms and never regained consciousness.”
